Jonathan
Alpeyrie was born in France in 1979, from a Spanish
mother and a Russian father. Living in Paris, he decided
to leave the old continent to join his father in the United
States. Jon has been living in New York since July 1993,
and went to school at the University of Chicago, where
he studied medieval history.
Jonathan
started photographing international events in Panama,
and has covered stories in the US, Western Europe, Chiapas,
Armenia, Azerbaijan, Congo, Ivory Coast, Syria, Lebanon,
Georgia, Ehtiopia, and Nepal.
In
the past two years he has been concentrating on conflict
around the world, specifically focusing on the Caucasus.
Jonathan first went to Armenia and worked on a photo
essay about former Soviet heavy industrial cities in
Armenia. He returned to the Caucasus in the spring 2004
to photograph the ethnic problems in the South Caucasus,
through war and social problems. He covered the war
in Karabakh for one month in may 2004, and photographed
the life of local Karabastis. Jonathan returned to Georgia
to cover the war in South Ossetia. After seeing some
pretty heavy combat, he entered the Pankisi gorge to
live and photograph the Chechen refugees. I have also covered the war in Southern Ethiopia with the OLF rebels, and
planning in returning to Ethiopia to follow suit.
Jonathan
has shot for several publications including AFP, American
Photo, Glamour (France), Wine spectator, Newsweek,
and he is a contributor to Getty Images.
